The UK House Price Index shows prices in Kirklees have risen by 5.3% in the past year while Calderdale has seen a 6.9% rise

House prices in Kirklees are rising by an average of £19 a day, a survey has revealed.
Prices in the district have increased by 5.3% in the past year – from £129,832 in April, 2015, to £136,717 in April, 2016 – according to the UK House price Index.
Alex McNeil, of estate agency Bramleys in Huddersfield, said: “This confirms that the market has been relatively stable for two or three years with a little bit of growth. Values are now more or less where they were back in 2008.”
The index shows that house prices are growing even faster in Calderdale – up by 6.9% in a year to an average price of £128,554 or an average increase of £23 a day.
UK average house prices have increased by 8.2% in the year to April, 2016 – slightly down on the figure of 8.5% in the year to March, 2016, but continuing the trend for strong growth seen since the end of 2013.
The average UK house price was £209,000 in April, 2016 – up by £16,000 on April, 2015, and £1,300 higher than last month.
The main contribution to the increase came from England, where house prices rose by 9.1% over the year to April, 2016. The average price in England is now £225,000.
Wales saw house prices rise by 1.7% over the latest 12 months to stand at £139,000 while the average price in Scotland increased by 3.3% to stand at £138,000. The average price in Northern Ireland is currently £118,000.

Mr McNeil said there was bound to be uncertainty following the EU referendum result, but said the local property market was strong enough to get througn it. “There are not as many people in negative equity than there were three or four years ago,” he said. “The supply of houses as improved a little this year and a lot of builders are committed to building new homes. People buying those homes on part exchange will release another property to the secondhand market.

Shopkeeper held up at knifepoint

A robber who held up a shopkeeper at knifepoint has been jailed for a total of five years eight months.
Victim Fahim Kamini was working alone in the Top Shop Mini Market in Leeds Road, Heckmondwike, around 8pm on March 7 this year when Stewart Tyrone Stone entered.
Alisha Kaye prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court Stone was wearing a hooded top which he had pulled up and was holding a knife in his hand.
He immediately approached the counter and thrust the knife towards Mr Kamini saying “Fahim give me the money.”
Initially the shopkeeper thought it was a joke and started laughing but when he put his hand out to touch the knife he realised it was real because he cut his hand on it.
Stone then thrust the knife at him again and started pressing buttons on the till to open it. The till began to fall but he was able to grab it and pull it back and managed to hit the right button.

Family sues Huddersfield company Mamas & Papas over buggy

Company says the buggy met strict safety standards

A family is suing a Huddersfield-based company claiming their 10-month-old child was thrown into the road when their buggy overturned.
They say they were taking the youngster to nursery when the Mamas & Papas pushchair turned over near their home in London.
The baby was thrown onto the ground, landing face down in the road.
Mum Jenna Storey, who works in the City, says luckily there was no oncoming traffic, and passers by helped get her and her son on to the pavement.
She said her son has recovered and she has been offered a new buggy, but wants the Huddersfield firm to investigate for the sake of other families.
She said Mamas & Papas told her more than 7,000 of the Sola City chairs had been sold since 2014 with no similar problems. They were discontinued last year.
“I didn’t want to go to the courts,” said 31-year-old Mrs Storey told the London Standard. “It’s not about the money. If we win compensation some would go into my baby’s savings and some to the charity my husband works for, which tackles neo-natal deaths in Africa. A buggy shouldn’t overturn. If this is a known flaw they should do a recall or investigate further.”

EU Referendum: Kirklees votes to leave the EU; David Cameron to resign in October

Forecast shows Britain vote to leave EU with 52 per cent majority

Kirklees voters played their part in the UK's bid to leave the EU.
55 per cent of people voted to Leave the European Union, leaving local politicians shocked.
In a room full of councillors and campaigners only a small group of UKIP supporters were cheering.
Kirklees Tory chief, Clr David Hall, said he was pleased to see the country get its sovereignty back.
And he said he thought it was a case of short term pain and then long term gain.
"I hope the markets won't react too badly to the result.

"I think now we can really look forward to as a country being an international player in trade instead of just a European player."
But Clr Carole Pattison, Labour's deputy leader, said she was very disappointed that the electorate had bought the rhetoric of the Leave campaign.

EU Referendum: How will Huddersfield vote? Our bumper guide to the EU vote and what to do if you can't decide

Why should we leave the EU? Why should we remain in the EU? How do I vote? When will the results be announced? All this and more in our bumper guide to the EU referendum in Kirklees

Tomorrow Britain goes to the polls to decide the future of our relationship with the European Union.
The EU referendum is expected to have a bumper turnout and debates about whether to leave or remain in the EU have dominated the headlines.
But how will Huddersfield — and Kirklees — vote? Here's a round up of what Huddersfield has been saying about the referendum, from business leaders to school pupils.
If you're undecided, we've also got an impartial guide on how to make up your mind — and all the information you need for voting day.

Here's our bumper guide to the EU referendum:

How do I vote?

The polls open tomorrow — and here's the key question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"
Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm. You should have received a polling card, detailing where to cast your vote — or you may have already voted by post.

Why should I vote?

Huddersfield politics expert Pete Woodcock is adamant that this week’s EU referendum is the most important political issue of our generation.
He said: "It is imperative that people do vote on an issue which will change the economy, the way this country is governed and the very ethos of this country for the future."
Still not convinced? Read his full argument here
Combining the figures for those who said they would either definitely or probably vote in the referendum:
  • 38% of 18 to 24 year olds plan to vote
  • 45% of 25 to 34 year olds plan to vote
  • 53% of 35 to 44 year olds plan to vote
  • 66% of 45 to 54 year olds plan to vote
  • 80% of people aged 55 or more plan to vote

Should I vote leave or remain?

Of course we can't tell you whether to vote yes or no — but we can present the key arguments on each side and what Huddersfield has had to say about Brexit.
And for an entirely different perspective, we chatted to pupils at Spring Grove Junior, Infant and Nursery School about how they would vote, if they were old enough:
And what about people from Huddersfield who moved to sunnier climes? We spoke to ex-pats living in Spain.

How would Brexit affect Huddersfield?

Wondering what the whole debate has to do with Huddersfield — or what the EU has ever done for our town? Read on...

What if I can't make my mind up?

Many of us still haven't a clue whether we are Leave or Remain, despite millions of words uttered and written on the subject.
The founder of Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis, says that we’ll never truly know the right answer to this Thursday’s EU vote, as we will only ever discover how one outcome turns out.
He's written an impartial guide to making your mind up: read it here.

What happens after the polls close?

The polls close at 10pm, after which Kirklees votes will be sent to Cathedral House in Huddersfield, and Calderdale votes to North Bridge Leisure Centre, for counting.
Each local authority will count votes for “Leave the EU” or “Remain in the EU” as a simple borough wide total. No constituency or ward breakdowns are being published on the night.
Votes must be verified by the regional centre at Leeds before the results of the councils are announced.

When will we know the result?

Kirklees Council officials are currently guessing they will be ready to declare sometime between 2.30am and 5am.
As the regional results are collated, a nationwide rolling total will be made public to show which way the country is leaning.
Then it will be over to Manchester where the chief counting officer will announce the official result.
The tipping point at which one side cannot be beaten is expected to be at about 6am but it is thought that a pretty clear picture of which way the vote is going will be known from about 4am.
The Examiner will bring you live updates, results and reaction for Kirklees and Yorkshire from 10pm on Thursday night.
