Eighty Huddersfield homes left without power after underground cable fire

Eighty homes were left without power after a cable fire.
Electricity was cut to properties on and around Spinkfield Road in Birkby for almost eight hours after underground link cable box caught alight at 1.20am today.
Huddersfield firefighters attended the scene and blocked off the road but were unable to extinguish the flames until workers from Northern Power Grid isolated the area.
The flames then died down by themselves by 3.20am, allowing the workmen to repair damaged cables and replace the link box and the road to be re-opened.
Power was restored to all affected properties by 9am.
A spokesman from Northern Power Grid said: “We would like to apologise to all customers affected by the situation and to thank them for their patience while we worked to restore power.”
