This amazing underground house has the best views in Huddersfield - plus a swimming pool and cave
Unique house built by famous architect
It’s one of the most amazing homes in the country ... and it’s here in Huddersfield.
Underhill at Holme is a unique house built by well-known retired architect Arthur Quarmby where the family his lived for 41 years.
It has the most spectacular views over the Holme Valley – but most of it is underground and is designed around a spectacular swimming pool.
It’s now for sale for £700,000 – but to put that in context two-bedroom flats in London sell for more than £600,000.
Arthur, 82, said: “We moved into the house in 1975 and have lived in it with great delight ever since.”
He and wife Jean are now looking to downsize and want a two-bedroomed home ‘with character’ in the Holme Valley but can’t find anything suitable.
“It needs to have a fair-sized dining room, big enough for our grand piano,” said Arthur who sings with both Huddersfield Choral Society and Colne Valley Male Voice Choir. “But no-one seems to be building two-bedroomed houses any more.”
Arthur always had an eye for unusual architecture and was president of the British Earth Sheltering Association which was interested in the concept of building into the earth. He has given talks worldwide on the subject.
He admits her and Jean don’t use the swimming pool these days but quickly heats it up when the family are coming to visit.
They have two children, Jonathan and Rachel, and four grandchildren.
Although underground, light floods into the house from a roof light above and 20ft sliding windows at the front.
