Campaigners urge local NHS bosses to invest in hospital earmarked for demolition

Campaigners hoping to save Huddersfield’s A&E have urged local NHS bosses to invest in the hospital – rather than knock it down.

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is earmarked for demolition under the Right Care Right Time Right Place plan

The hospital would be replaced by a new, smaller hospital which would have an urgent care unit – but no emergency care centre.

Under the controversial plan emergency care would be centralised at Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax.

ut campaign group #HandsOffHRI has urged local NHS bosses behind the plan to invest in the existing facility which admitted its first patients 50 years ago today.

Campaigner founder Karl Deitch said: “The HRI has supported the local community for the last 50 years. It has helped keep many alive and has brought many into the world.

Group of Lockwood firms demand answers over fumes from former Hunters tip

Businesses have been left angry over a wall of silence from Kirklees Council over potentially harmful fumes from a Lockwood tip site.

Firms in and around the abandoned former Hunters tip in Queens Mill Road fear for the health of employees.

Last month the huge waste mountain burst into flames sending plumes of acrid smoke across the area.

Emergency crews told people to keep their doors and windows shut at the time – but since then there has been little advice issued, leaving local people in the dark.

Last week a group of 31 Lockwood businesses – led by Martin Adams, managing director of Wentworth Valve Components Ltd – called for answers from Kirklees over the health risk to employees.

Since the Examiner reported Mr Adams’ concerns another seven companies and organisations have joined the group.

A week on the group are still waiting for answers from the council and Mr Adams said: “We have still not received a response from the council regarding the fire and the risk it poses to our employees.

“We are dismayed at the lack of communication with local businesses regarding the fire.

Motorists pulled over by police as part of road safety initiative

Drivers were stopped in Huddersfield on Wednesday as part of a European road safety awareness initiative.

West Yorkshire Police joined forces with other emergency services to mark European Day Without a Road Death, or Project Edward as it is known.

Motorists were pulled over near Leeds Road playing fields and on Bradley Road for a variety of spot checks including seat belts, using a mobile phone whilst driving and no insurance.

West Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Mark Milsom said: “There were 48 road users fatally injured on West Yorkshire’s roads in 2015, which is a reduction in the county from the previous two years, however it is still nearly one per week and a figure we are keen to try and reduce further.

“Any police officer will agree it is the hardest part of the job when having to make that knock on the door and devastate a family by telling them their loved one has died and in many cases, often these tragic circumstances could have been prevented.

20-year-old from Crosland Moor hurt in motiveless attack

A man says he has been scarred for life after being slashed in the face in a row over a cigarette.

The 20-year-old, who does not want to be named, was standing outside Dixie Chicken in Cross Church Street in the centre of Huddersfield at about 2am on Sunday after spending Saturday night in town when a man he had never seen before approached him and asked for a cigarette.

The victim said he told him he didn’t have one– and the man punched him in the face before slashing him in the face, head and ear with a craft knife .

He said: “I thought he had scratched me but he cut my face with the knife.

“I don’t know why he slashed me. The argument started over a cigarette outside Dixie Chicken and moved to St Peter’s Gardens. I wouldn’t give him a cigarette and then it spiralled out of control.

“I ran off and a couple helped me. They rang the ambulance and put a tissue on my face to stop the bleeding.”

Number of girls and boys at risk is rising, meeting told

The number of boys at risk from being sexually exploited in Kirklees is rising, councillors have been told.

The total number of boys and girls currently considered at risk is 73, a rise which may be linked to greater awareness and improved services.

A meeting of the council heard calls for an independent inquiry into historic child abuse in Kirklees as councillors debated the authority’s role in tackling abuse in the light of scandals in Rotherham and elsewhere.

Councillor Erin Hill, Cabinet member for Family Support and Child Protection, said a Dewsbury-based team of police and social workers was developing a ‘mapping’ strategy to help understand the relationship between young people and perpetrators.

A new detective sergeant joined the team in May to focus on the ‘mapping’ exercise which would aim to identify the locations where young people might be targeted by would-be abusers.

Clr Hill said the number of at-risk referrals for child sexual abuse was up and the authorities were dealing with more boys who had been identified as being at risk from grooming.

“It is notoriously under-reported,” said Clr Hill.

“Perpetrators are finding new ways to hide and young people are sometimes too scared to come forward.”

She said the Dewsbury hub was also dealing with issues around forced marriage and human trafficking.

The meeting was told ‘collaborative working’ between agencies had led to Operation Tendersea, the arrest of 43 alleged perpetrators of historical child sexual abuse in Kirklees.

Arrested man taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

A police watchdog is investigating the death of a man in Huddersfield following his arrest.

Officers were called to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s A&E department at 7am on Tuesday morning to a report of a man assaulting staff, according to West Yorkshire Police.

A Force spokesman said: “Police attended and a man was arrested and taken to Huddersfield Police Station.

“Due to his violent and erratic behaviour he was assessed by a custody nurse who advised he be returned to the hospital for a full medical examination.

“A short time after arriving back at the hospital, he appeared to suffer a medical episode and died.

“Due to the circumstances and in accordance with normal procedure, the matter was immediately referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”

A Force spokesman would not say whether the man was in custody at the time of his death.

Woman using workplace loos spotted spy camera

A Crosland Moor man has been given a community order after he was found to have hidden a camera in the ladies’ toilet at the firm where he worked.

Leeds Crown Court heard the camera was discovered when a colleague of Ghulam Dastgir spotted a small hole in the ceiling tile above her at the company in Bradley .

After she had washed her hands she climbed up to investigate and spotted the camera.

Tony Kelbrick, prosecuting, said the female employees then went to the management to find out what was going on.

The camera was recovered and the memory was downloaded and the first image was of Dastgir fixing it in position.

A number of images of women had been captured as well as the 12-year-old daughter of one of the employees.

Judge says it was lucky no-one was seriously ill after eating contaminated meat

A chicken supplier has escaped jail after hygiene inspectors found maggots at his filthy meat storage and cutting premises.

Ansar Mahmood, 44, trading as A S Poultry, delivered chicken to food outlets across Huddersfield and Calderdale.

Bradford Crown Court was told that it was only by good fortune that no-one suffered a serious illness or died during Ramadan and Eid in 2015.

Judge Colin Burn told father-of-four Mahmood that he would have been charged with manslaughter if anyone had died.

The court heard how Calderdale Council environmental health officers went to the premises in Battinson Court, Halifax, in June 2015 after an anonymous complaint about the smell of rotting chicken guts and other butchery waste.

When they returned a few days later they saw Mahmood loading a refrigerated van without wearing any protective clothing.

When the waste food bins were inspected they found they were infested with maggots and the inside of the van was dirty.

Prosecutor Abdul Shakoor said when the inspectors went inside the premises it was clear that they were being operated as an unregistered food business.

Mr Shakoor outlined a series of breaches of food safety and hygiene regulations uncovered by the inspectors including a mincer which was infested with maggots and flies.

The court heard that there was a large hole in a basement wall which provided easy access for pests and officers found a five kilo bag of chicken livers which was unfit for human consumption.

Mahmood confirmed that he had been selling chicken to shops in Huddersfield and Calderdale, but he denied ever using the filthy mincer.

He claimed to have only cut up two boxes of chicken at the premises on one occasion and said the equipment belonged to someone else.
